Visit to The Hague

LimeCulture have just returned from an educational visit to The Hague. The Dutch police are keen to share their knowledgeable about sexual violence and to have a greater understanding of how we deal with sexual violence in the UK. Kim travelled to The Hague with Professor Susan Lea, Vice President of King’s College London and Professor Caroline Taylor, Foundation Chair in Social Justice at the Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.

Meetings were held with specialist police officers who were keen to learn more about the role of the ISVA in the UK. There is no equivalent post within the Dutch system at present although support is offered through the court process by a service which appeared to be similar to the Witness Service in the UK.

A presentation about honour related crime was also delivered, giving an interesting insight into the processes that the police have adopted to manage risks associated with HBV.  Of particular interest was the role that the community are encouraged to play in mediation with families.

A return visit to The Hague is planned for 2013 and officers have been invited to the ISVA Knowledge and Network event which LimeCulture is holding on the 25th April 2013 to help them get a better understanding of the work of the ISVA.
