Military Sexual Trauma (MST) encompasses a continuum of sexual harassment and sexual assault that occurs within the military context. Survivors of MST face complex challenges in seeking support and justice, including stigma, loyalty codes, and institutional barriers, all of which can significantly impact their health and wellbeing.
This full-day workshop has been specifically designed to build ISVA knowledge, confidence, and capacity in responding to military victim-survivors. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of MST, its prevalence, and its distinct impacts, alongside practical strategies for providing tailored support.
With insights from the Centre for Military Women’s research, the Hidden Voices Projects lived expereince participants, an exploration of military and civilian systems and group discussions on the day, the workshop will enable ISVAs to strengthen their practice, bridge gaps in service provision, and ensure survivors receive tailored and joined-up care.
The training will be jointly delivered by LimeCulture and subject matter experts from the Centre for Military Women’s Research at Anglia Ruskin University.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define Military Sexual Trauma and recognise how it differs from civilian experiences of sexual violence.
- Identify the cultural, institutional, and structural factors that contribute to MST and create barriers to disclosure.
- Understand the impact of MST on survivors’ mental health, physical wellbeing, and professional lives.
- Navigate the Service Justice System (SJS) and explain survivors’ rights within military justice pathways.
- Apply trauma-informed and survivor-centred approaches when working with MST survivors.
- Build connections with military-specific welfare and support services to ensure coordinated care.
- Reflect on learning from lived experience testimony to inform and enhance practice.

ISVAs must currently be in training or have completed an accredited ISVA programme to enrol on this course.
